Spectrum is the 1973 debut album by drummer Billy Cobham .
After three successful years as a drummer with the Mahavishnu Orchestra , Cobham established his own style between jazz, rock and funk with his debut album and made him well-known as a solo artist. The album was recorded in the three days from May 14 to 16, 1973 in Electric Lady Studios in New York City and later remixed in Trident Studios in London. Billy Cobham also appeared as a producer for his Billham Cobly Productions , sound engineer was Ken Scott . The cover image was designed by Jeff Snider, and Stanisław Zagórski was responsible for the artwork .

As stated on the LP, the line-up for all tracks with the exception of Spectrum and Le Lis was as follows: Billy Cobham (perc), Tommy Bolin (g), Jan Hammer (ep, p, syn), Lee Sklar (eb). In Spectrum and Le Lis played Billy Cobham (perc), Joe Farrell (fl, ss, as), Jimmy Owens (flh, tp), John Tropea (g), Jan Hammer (ep, syn), Ron Carter (b) Ray Barretto (congas).
reception
The album reached number one in the jazz album charts in 1973 and number 26 in the US charts in 1974. Scott Yanow from allmusic describes the album as a “strong mixture of rock rhythms and jazzy improvisations.” He gave the album four and a half stars out of five.
