The Photo Gallery Spectrum or photo gallery Spectrum and photo gallery spectrum and spectrum Photo Gallery was founded in 1972 in Hanover founded and was one of the first photo galleries in Europe. The non-commercial gallery run through voluntary work has been able to organize numerous exhibitions over two decades and show, for example, photographs by Hein Gorny , Heinrich Riebesehl , Robert Capa , Andreas Feininger , Michael Schmidt and Raoul Hausmann .

Together with Joachim Giesel , Peter Gauditz , Heinrich Riebesehl and a group of other professional photographers, the press photographer and author Karin Blüher was one of the founders of the Spectrum Photo Gallery, which was integrated into the newly opened Sprengel Museum in 1979 and formed the basis of the photography and media collection there educated.

The Spectrum photo gallery was operated until 1991 and then taken over by the Sprengel Museum Hannover , which in 1994 exhibited selected photographs in a review in its own house.

Since 1994, the Lower Saxony Foundation, together with the Sprengel Museum Hannover, has been building on the history of the Spectrum photo gallery by awarding the SPECTRUM International Prize for Photography, endowed with 15,000 euros .
