Speicherstadttrathaus

The Speicherstadttrathaus is the administration building of the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG . It is located in the historic warehouse complex of the Speicherstadt in the Port of Hamburg . The Speicherstadt has been a listed building since 1991 and has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites along with the neighboring Kontorhaus district since July 5, 2015 .

Establishment

The building was erected as part of the third construction phase during the construction of the Speicherstadt between 1899 and 1912 on the former island of Wandrahm , in the street Bei St. Annen 1 , as part of Block U, on 463 oak piles. The construction of the building took place between 1902 and 1904. The architects were Johannes Grotjan and from the company Hanssen & Meerwein Bernhard Hanssen and Wilhelm Emil Meerwein . The inauguration took place on June 1, 1904. The building was planned for the Hamburger Freihafen-Lagerhaus-Gesellschaft , today Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG , as the head office and was the successor to the headquarters building at Sandtorkai 1, which was inaugurated in 1887 and which had become too small in the meantime. The management building was also built by Hanssen & Meerwein.

Hanssen & Meerwein and Grotjan were not only involved in the management building, the previous building, but also in the construction of the Hamburg town hall . The naming of the Speicherstadttrathaus alludes to the importance of the HFLG for the Speicherstadt. But there are also similarities with the Hamburg City Hall in the architecture. The bell tower towers over the surrounding buildings and the facade bears traces of eclecticism . Romanesque round arches and Renaissance windows were combined with Baroque decorative elements. In addition, the brick facade made of Saxon precious brick was loosened up by sandstone strips made of gray Oberkirchen sandstone . In the heavily decorated gable is the coat of arms of the HFLG. The spiers are studded with copper. The construction of the building cost 600,000 Reichsmarks and took two years.

The interior was furnished in Art Nouveau style . The curved forms of Art Nouveau can be found on the tiles, doors and wooden panels. In addition, the rooms were lined with black slates with enclosed fossils.

The building was not damaged in the Second World War and it was completely renovated for its 100th birthday. The work was directed by the architects Gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg and Partner . In addition to the preservation of the historical architecture, a focus was on modernization for today's modern use. New conference rooms were created in the foyer when the originally open atrium was closed by a curved glass roof between 2001 and 2002.
