The Spelaeodiscidae are a small family of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). It currently contains around 15 species.
features
The cases are right-handed, rarely left-handed. They are usually very small (less than 5 mm) and flattened-conical. While the embryonic convolutions are provided with a fine granulation, the postembryonic convolutions have a more or less clear radial ribbing. The mouth may have teeth, but lamellae are absent. The mouth rim is bent and usually widened; only rarely is the mouth rim simply designed. The navel is open, but the depth varies. The penis and epiphallus are present in the hermaphroditic genital apparatus. The prostate is relatively short to medium in length with few acini . The blind sack and the penis attachment are always present. The stem of the spermathec is clearly swollen and without a diverticulum . Some species in the genus Spelaeodiscus are blind.
Geographical distribution and way of life
Almost all species of the Spelaeodiscidae family are native to south-eastern Europe. Only one species penetrates as far as southern Poland. They live there very hidden under stones or are pronounced cave dwellers. Therefore, in some species, the eyes are reduced.
Systematics
The Spelaeodiscidae family is now recognized by many authors. The Fauna Europaea and Molluscs of central Europe websites treat the taxon as a subfamily of the Strobilopsidae . Francisco Welter Schultes in AnimalBase places the genus Spelaeodiscus against the Pupillidae. There are minor differences in the number of included categories and their status. The types are only a selection.

- ↑ Aspasita is described by Kearney et al. (1983) and Francisco Welter Schultes treated as a synonym of Spelaeodiscus in AnimalBase ; MollBase and the Fauna Europaea place Aspasita as a subgenus to Spelaeodiscus , Schileyko (1998) treats it as an independent genus.
