The Strobilopsidae are a small family of snails from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora). About 25 species of the family are currently known.

features

The shells of the Strobilopsidae are conical to flattened-conical, whereby the diameter is always larger than the height. They are very small forms that are only a few millimeters in size. Up to about six turns are formed. The mouth can be rounded or slightly angled. The mouth has lamellar teeth that sit relatively deep in the mouth. The mouth rim is usually bent and widened. The navel is usually open, but it can be narrow or wide. The penis and epiphallus are developed in the hermaphroditic genital apparatus. Blind sac ( caecum ) and appendix on the penis mostly present; however, the blind sack is relatively short. A diverticulum may or may not be present on the stem of the spermathec.

Geographical distribution and way of life

The representatives of the Strobilopsidae are widespread in Southeast Asia and America. In America the distribution area extends from southeast Canada, over the eastern half of the USA, northeast Mexico, Central America to Venezuela and northeast Brazil. Other occurrences are on the West Indies and the Galapagos Islands. The position of one species of Baja California is unclear. In Southeast Asia the distribution area extends from Korea, Japan and China over the Philippines, Indonesia to New Guinea.

Systematics

The systematic extent of the family is controversial. Some authors count the Spelaeodiscidae as a subfamily of the Strobilopsidae. Of course, this would greatly expand the geographic distribution.

Phylogeny

The internal phylogeny of the Strobilopsidae is unknown. In contrast, a first relationship analysis (Wade et al., 2006) based on molecular data revealed an unsolved trichotomy of Strobilopsidae, Lauriidae and a Monophylum consisting of Orculidae and Pyramidulidae . However, the data situation is completely inadequate; it is based only on four taxa.
