The orculidae (Orculidae), also Tönnchenschnecken called, are a family from the subordination of terrestrial snails (gastropod). There are around 32 species in Europe.

features

The housings are cylindrical to conical. They can be twisted right or left. The adult size ranges from about 3 mm to 10 mm. There can be up to 10 turns. The walkways are tightly wound and only slowly increase. The postembryonic passages usually have a more or less clearly pronounced radial sculpture. In contrast, the embryonic convolutions show a fine granular structure, often combined with very fine spiral stripes. The rounded mouth has numerous teeth that protrude into the mouth. The edge is bent and usually a little wider. In the hermaphroditic reproductive system there is a penis and epiphallus. The penile appendix and a blind sac are originally present, but tend to be reduced or remodeled. A flagellum is only rudimentary or completely absent. A diverticulum on the stem of the spermathec may or may not be present.

Occurrence, way of life and distribution

The species in the family live in the moss, under leaves and rock rubble. Some species camouflage their housings with stuck-on clods of earth and feces. The family is common in Central and Southern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, North and South Africa, and Madagascar.

Systematics

The family of the cone snail (Orculidae) is one of 13 families of the superfamily Pupilloidea (after Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). Schileyko (1998), on the other hand, places them in a separate superfamily Orculoidea. Bouchet & Rocroi divide the family into the two subfamilies Orculinae Pilsbry, 1918 and Odontocycladinae Hausdorf, 1996. Schileyko (1998), on the other hand, identifies five subfamilies: Orculinae Pilsbry, 1918, Pagodulinae Pilsbry, 1924, Odontocycladinae Hausdorf, 1996, Argninae Hudec, 1965 Lauriinae Steenberg, 1925. The latter two families are interpreted by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) as independent families Argnidae and Lauriidae.
