It is considered a military historical monument of regional importance.

Locking point Klausenpass

The Klausen Pass ( 1948  m ) as a direct connection between the cantons of Glarus and Uri was of strategic military importance.

In the summer of 1799 fights between the Austrians, with the aid of the Glarus and Uri, and the French who invaded Switzerland took place on the Klausen Pass as part of the Second Coalition War . In October 1799, French troops marched over the pass in order to attack Suvorov's troops from the flank in the Glarnerland .

The construction of the Klausenpassstrasse, which was opened to traffic in 1899, was dominated by the expansion of the Gotthard fortress. The Klausen and Susten Pass on the axis Aare Valley - Reuss Valley - Linthal were supposed to form a connection line running along the northern slope of the main Alpine ridge, on which troops could easily be moved.

During the Second World War, the Klausenpass was part of the Reduit and a direct access to the Gotthard fortress area , which had to be maintained. Until the end of the 1980s, the Klausen Pass formed a separate blocking point (Army designation No. 2457) and was then integrated into the Vorfrutt Lock (east of the Klausen Pass) -Klausen Pass (Army designation No. 2454).

The expansion of the blocking points in the 1960s also affected the Klausen Pass. As in the rest of Switzerland, standardized shelters made of prefabricated concrete elements with atomic protection (VOBAG 22, U4 spherical bunker) were buried. The shelters for the soldiers were supposed to serve the delay fight for the Klausen Pass.
