The cobwebs saxifrage ( Saxifraga arachnoidea ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae). The species was discovered by Kaspar Maria von Sternberg in 1804 in the Valle d'Ampola west of Lake Garda.

features

The cobweb saxifrage is a loosely growing, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. The stems are prostrate-ascending, 10 to 30 centimeters long and richly branched. The basal leaves are not arranged as a rosette, their outline is kidney-shaped to rounded, they are up to 20 millimeters wide, yellow-green, thin, almost translucent and narrow in a wedge into the short petiole; there are 3 to 5 coarse teeth on the front. The upper stem leaves are smaller and sessile. Stems and leaves are covered with long, sticky glandular hairs, which is what gives the plant its name.

There are one to three flowers on each of the forked stems. The petals are pale yellow, egg-shaped and slightly longer than the sepals.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 56 or 66.

Occurrence

The cobweb saxifrage occurs in Judicaria and the Bergamasque Alps in rain-protected locations under limestone cliffs and overhangs at altitudes of 600 to 1700 meters. This species is rare. At these locations it is often associated with other endemic Judiciaries such as Moehringia glaucovirens or Aquilegia thalictrifolia .
