The Spirillinida are an order of shell-bearing, marine unicellular organisms from the group of foraminifera .

features

The species of the order secrete their housing made of low magnesium calcite (<5 mol% magnesium ), which is composed of individual, few or a mosaic of crystals . The housings are perforated or imperforate, planispiral to highly trochospiral and multi-chambered. The first chamber, the proloculus , is spherical, the second tubular and either un- or few-chambered. The individual chambers are sometimes further subdivided.

Systematics

The order has been documented by fossils since the Upper Triassic . It contains two families , but there is no superfamily.
