Spirit of Wonder

Spirit of Wonder ( Japanese ス ピ リ ッ ト オ ブ ワ ン ダ ー , supiritto obu wandā ) is a manga series by the artist Kenji Tsuruta , which was also implemented as an anime . It can be assigned to the genre of his own and consists of eleven science fiction episodes. The stories combine modern with old technology.

Some episodes are about a treasure hunt involving a young woman and a scientist. Other episodes describe the life of "Miss China" in her small restaurant near Bristol , of her everyday life with the restaurant guests.

Publications

After working for various fan magazines and as an assistant for other manga artists, Tsuruta created the first episode of Spirit of Wonder in the 1980s , It's a big and wonderful universe, isn't it? ( 広 く て す て き な 宇宙 じ ゃ な い か , Hiroku te suteki na uchū ja nai ka ). He took the story in a competition run by the manga magazine Morning and won the competition prize. Further episodes of the Spirit of Wonder series followed by 1995 . While most of the eleven stories were first published in Morning , the episodes about "Miss China" appeared in Afternoon magazine between 1990 and 1995 . The Kōdansha publishing house brought the eleven episodes out in August 1997 as a book.

Spirit of Wonder has been translated into several languages, among other things. The book was published in German from 2001 to 2002 by Dino Verlag . While Spirit of Wonder was published as a single volume in Japan, Dino Verlag divided the manga into three parts for German publication. These episodes were translated by Akiko Altmann . Glénat published Spirit of Wonder in Spain , also in three volumes. The manga was published by Dark Horse Comics in the USA and by Casterman in France .

Film adaptations

The animation studio Asiadou adapted Spirit of Wonder as a 45-minute anime film. This appeared in June 1992 in the form of an Original Video Animation (OVA) directly on video . Mitsuru Hongo directed the series titled Spirit of Wonder: China-san no Yūutsu ( ザ ス ピ リ ッ ト オ ブ ワ ン ダ ー チ ャ イ ナ さ ん の 憂鬱 , supiritto obu wandā: chaina-san no yūutsu ). Asiadou later produced a sequel with four episodes under the title Spirit of Wonder: Shōnen Kagaku Club ( ザ ス ピ リ ッ ト オ ブ ワ ン ダ ー 少年 科學 倶 楽 部 , supiritto obu wandā - shōnen kagaku kurabu ). These four episodes, directed by Takashi Anno , were released in 2001 in Japan, again as OVA.

In 2004 Bandai Visual released all episodes in the DVD box set “Wonderbox”, also in English. A DVD with Japanese, German and Italian dubbing was released in Germany in 2004 by Panini Video . The DVD released in Germany contains the four episodes from 2000.
