Origin and meaning

The name is of Greek origin and a short form of Spyridon .

It is a male given name, which is used in the Greek-speaking population (Greece, especially in Corfu, whose patron saint is Saint Spyridon, in Cyprus, Greek diaspora) and among Christians in Lebanon, where it is a common first and last name, occurs quite often. It is a shortened form of the archaic sounding Spyridon (Σπυρίδων), which means "basket that was used to carry seeds" (grπυρί, grain, seeds) in ancient Greek.

Špiro is also a male Croatian and Montenegrin name.

In Germany the family name Spiro originated as a falsification of Speyer, the name of a town in the Rhineland. He is one of several Jewish family names that arose in this way, along with the family name Shapiro .
