Spiros Zodhiates

Spiros Zodhiates ( Greek Σπύρος Ζωδιάτης ; * March 13, 1922 ; † October 10, 2009 ) was a Greek - American theologian , author and missionary . He became known through the mission company AMG (Advancing the Ministries of the Gospel) International, a Christian mission and emergency aid society that is active in over 40 countries. He introduced the modern Greek pronunciation of classical Greek in American theology.

Life

Zodhiates was born in Cyprus . After studying in Greece, he continued his studies at the American University in Cairo , Egypt, and received a bachelor's degree from the National Bible Institute ( Stelton College ) in New York and an MA from New York University . In 1978 he received his doctorate in theology from Luther Rice Seminary , Jacksonville , Florida. In 1946 he came to the United States at the invitation of the American Committee for the Evangelization of the Greeks (AMG International) and became its President in 1966. Under his leadership, AMG grew from a small mission company with a focus on Greece to a global mission and aid company.

In 1951, Zodhiates developed a passion for radio when he saw the possibility of reaching the masses with it. He used his Greek origins and knowledge of the Greek language to preach the gospel to people through the radio. His radio reports were later published in book form. He also edited the magazine Pulpit Helps . In the 1980s, television broadcasts also began to spread.

Impact history

Zodhiates had a great influence especially on the Greek Evangelical Church . The church's leisure center in Leptokarya , Greece is named after him.
