Spirotaenia is a genus of algae from the order of the ornamental algae and the family Mesotaeniaceae .


Spirotaenia is a genus of green algae that is apparently basal in the family tree of the Chloroplastida (also called Viridiplantae) and possibly a sister group of the Chlorokybophyceae . The genus was previously placed in the order of ornamental algae (Zygnemataceae). Sexual conjugation is observed, a type of reproduction that was previously only known in the ornamental algae and Mesotaeniaceae , the sister groups of land plants ( Embryophyta ). Surprisingly, it turned out that Spirotaenia is much more basal. In fact, there are significant differences in the conjugation process compared to the other groups mentioned.

Similar to the Mesotaeniaceae, the representatives of this genus are unicellular with a light microscopic structure- less cell wall . Because the differentiating features often only differ slightly from one another, a reliable determination is often only possible on the basis of the zygospores . Spirotaenia could actually be polyphyletic, i.e. H. consist of more than one particular lineage that are not closely related.

distribution

Commonly found in moderately to weakly acidic bog waters , peat cuttings , forests and meadow ditches. Some representatives live atmophytically on moist substrates such as earth, peat or rocks.
