The Spit Point ( English for headland tip ) is a headland on the island of Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It originally formed the eastern end of Elephant Spit . Due to the increasing erosion of the Elephant Spit, it is now the eastern branch of the Alert Island that was created .
The descriptive naming was probably made by American seal hunters who pursued the seal hunt here from 1855 .
