Justina Lumcer

M. Justina Lumcer OCSO (born May 25, 1942 in Vsetín ; † August 8, 2018 in the Maria Frieden Abbey ) was a Czech doctor and Trappist .

Life

M. Justina Lumcerová grew up as an only child in what was then Czechoslovakia . She studied medicine in Prague , did her doctorate and became a specialist in a lung clinic. She was an avid mountaineer and married Edmund, an engineer and mountaineer. After the Prague Spring , they fled to the West together, and she went to Munich to train as a specialist in pulmonology . The couple then emigrated to North America. When her husband fell ill, they both returned to Germany because she had better earning opportunities as a senior physician in Würzburg .

After the early death of her husband, Lumcerová gave up her position as senior physician and entered the Maria Frieden monastery on February 26, 1978 . There she worked in the parament workshop , in housekeeping and in the infirmary . In 1984 she was appointed superior ad nutum and in 1987 she was elected abbess for the first time . The blessing received by Abbot General Ambrose Southey . For health reasons she did not stand for re-election in 1993 and was again subpriorin and infirmarian. On January 15, 2004, Sister Justina was re-elected abbess for six years under the chairmanship of Abbot Bruno Gooskens von Mariawald and was appointed to her office on the same day. On February 18, 2008, she resigned from office when the first signs of Alzheimer's disease began to show.
