Splittermond is a German pen & paper role-playing game published by Uhrwerk Verlag . It is based on a specially developed control system and allows RPG in fantasy - game world Lorakis .

The rules

The rules of Splintermoon follow the structure of an RPG system .

Character creation

The players create player characters according to a point system, with the modules race, culture, ancestry and education. In addition to the humans , dwarves, and albums featured in most fantasy games, players can also take on the role of a gnome or vargen (wolf people). Each player character is a fateful personality with special abilities, as he, as a fragment carrier , carries part of the eponymous fragment moon. As a result, player characters have so-called splinter points with which, among other things, sample results can be improved or special gifts can be used. In the course of the game, the player characters also accumulate experience points with which they can improve their worldly or magical skills and reach new levels . With Splintermoon there are a total of four levels, called hero levels, which are a measure of the strength of a player character and limit their values.

Interaction with the game world

The game world is represented by a game master who depicts the physical, magical, divine or ghostly environment in which the player characters move, as well as guides the non-player characters with whom the players interact. In addition to the purely narrative game, the set of rules provides for tests for character traits. For this purpose, Splittermond uses two 10-sided dice (creating a Gaussian distribution ), to the result of which the player's skill value is added. The sum must reach the value for a challenge to be overcome if the test is to succeed. Such rehearsals are particularly required by the rule system when conflicts are played out, i.e. in armed combat, magic and verbal disputes. Particularly good or particularly bad sample results are expressed in terms of control technology in positive (or negative) degrees of success , which means that a sample is not only successful or unsuccessful, but can also have particularly good or particularly bad consequences. Numerous individual rules for specific role-play situations (tactics and leadership, research, travel, production of objects / potions / artifacts, training of an animal, etc.) supplement the set of rules.

Atypical for a German role-playing game is the tick- based combat system, in which a fight is not fought on a turn-based basis (each participant has a defined number of actions per round), but each individual action is assigned its own number of ticks , so that the sequence of actions is always different.

Rules for beginners

With the "Splittermond Beginner's Box", a simplified version of the Splittermond rules appeared in 2015, which offers fewer options but is more easily accessible. The rules for beginners are aimed at players with little experience as well as at people who would like to play Splittermond with less complex rules. The rules of the Splittermond beginners 'box only include the first and second hero levels, but are expanded to include hero levels 3 and 4 with the (not yet published) "Beginners' box - the adventure continues".

The world

The four domains (domains) from the perspective of this world

Splintermoon is located on the continent Lorakis, which is comparable to Eurasia in the Middle Ages both in terms of its dimensions and climatic conditions . The world offers European, Persian-Indian, Asian, Central American and African cultures, in addition there are typical fantasy cultures such as dwarf mountain peoples or Albian forest realms, all at the technical level of the High Middle Ages or before. The connecting elements of these cultures are, on the one hand, the common history of the peoples who were slaves to the drowned dragonlings around 1,000 years ago, and, on the other hand, the mysterious lunar paths that connect individual regions through enchanted paths through the fairy worlds .

Magic is omnipresent on Lorakis and also accessible to the common residents. Religiousness is also widespread, with belief being polytheistic and borrowed from the ancient worldview. Racial conflicts, on the other hand, hardly exist, due to the common past as slave peoples, a great tolerance towards different people has developed in most areas.

The community of players was involved in creating the world, and the story was further developed, among other things.

Tabletop miniatures game

At the HeinzCon 2015, the in-house convention of the Uhrwerk Verlag , a (previously nameless) tabletop miniature game was announced, which should be set in the Splittermond universe. A release was scheduled for 2016. In March 2018, the preliminary suspension of the project was confirmed in the publishing forum, but work on it was officially resumed in the course of the second Splittermond authors' meeting in 2018.
