Rabbi Zwi Hirsch Chajes with Spodek (around 1850)

The Spodek or Spodik ( yiddish ספּאָדעק, ספּאָדיק Pl. ספּאָדעקעס, ספּאָדיקעס spodekes, spodikes ) is a tall, flat top fur cap of conical shape. In contrast to the Schtreimel , which is rather wide and by no means high, the Spodik, of which there are several variants, is elongated, tall and slim.

use

The Spodik is worn on the Sabbath and on the Jewish holidays by adult male members of Hasidic communities, who - like the Gerer - come predominantly from Congress Poland . The Schtreimel, on the other hand, is common in the groups coming from Galicia , Bukovina , Romania and Hungary .
