The Sportjugend Nordrhein-Westfalen is the youth organization of the Landessportbundes Nordrhein-Westfalen eV (LSB NRW). It has been recognized as a carrier of free youth welfare under the Child and Youth Welfare Act (KJHG) and sees itself as a lobbyist for all children and young people in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Sportjugend NRW is a member of the Deutsche Sportjugend (dsj) and the Landesjugendring Nordrhein-Westfalen . It represents around 2.1 million children, adolescents and young people aged up to 27 in around 18,500 sports clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia.

history

In order to organize cross-association youth work in North Rhine-Westphalian sport, the delegates from the professional associations and city and district sports associations also decided to set up a youth committee at the founding meeting of the Landessportbund Nordrhein-Westfalen eV on May 6, 1947 in Hagen . For the management of this voluntary body, the position of a state youth warden was established and filled with Julius Überhoff, the chairman of the Westphalian Gymnastics Association and school rector from Hamm. This is considered to be the birth of the Sportjugend NRW.

A year later a youth secretariat was created and a full-time youth secretary was hired. Initially temporarily housed in offices in Hamm and Arnsberg , when the office of the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia moved to Duisburg in 1965, the youth secretariat also moved to the "House of Sports".

Courses for the qualification of youth and exercise leaders (teaching work), measures for general youth education and youth recreation as well as the establishment and maintenance of international youth encounters represented the main focus of activity in the early phase of the sports youth in North Rhine-Westphalia NRW, from which the youth holiday village Hinsbeck later emerged. In 1955, a youth education center was built in Hachen in the Sauerland on the site of the LSB NRW sports school that had been in operation three years earlier (today: Hachen Sports and Conference Center).

Sportjugend NRW organized its first international youth exchange with the Netherlands in 1952 . This was followed by encounters with young people from Great Britain (1955), Japan (1959), France , Israel (1962) and Tunisia (1966) as well as trips to Eastern European countries from the mid-1960s. The exchange with Poland was added at the end of the 1970s . The Sportjugend NRW organized their first Olympic camp for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome .

As a consequence of the Youth Welfare Act , the principle of the “independence of sports youth” was officially taken into account in a new youth regulation in 1968. To this day, it is a condition that the sports youth can receive funds for free youth welfare and grants them a say in the administration and budgeting of their funds within the corresponding association-legal requirements towards their adult association LSB NRW.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the areas of responsibility of Sportjugend NRW became even more differentiated through programs, projects and measures in the field of social work and social education , the integration of people with a migration background , the promotion of girls and young women and the political and cultural education of adolescents out. During this time, the designation “state youth warden” for the highest honorary position in the sports youth in North Rhine-Westphalia was replaced. Since then she has been "Chairwoman of the Sportjugend NRW."

organization structure

According to their current youth regulations v. On January 28th, 2012 the Sportjugend NRW is formed by the youth organizations of the members of the Landessportbund NRW e. V. As a youth organization of the State Sport Federation of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Sportjugend NRW is its subdivision under association law and is subject to its statutes. It runs and administers itself independently within the framework of these statutes. It is responsible for the planning and use of the funds it receives, but is not independent under tax law.

Organs of the Sportjugend NRW are the youth convention, the youth board and the management. The youth day is the highest body of the sports youth NRW. It is composed of the delegates of the members of the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and the members of the youth committee.

The honorary youth committee is elected for a term of four years. It consists of the chairperson of Sportjugend NRW and eight other members. For the legislative period from 2019 to 2023 he currently includes: Jens Wortmann (Chairman and also Vice-President Sports Youth in the Presidium of the LSB NRW), Julian Lagemann (Deputy Chairman), Stephanie Samel, Vanessa Mellentin, Daniel Skakavac, Julius Fahl, Laura Hantke, Max Leuchter, Lars Mittkowski and Martin Wonik (managing directors and advisory board member without voting rights).

As a platform for the exchange of opinions and experiences, the Sportjugend NRW has also set up youth conferences of the associations and the city and district sports associations. They consist of the chairmen of the youth organizations of the members of the State Sports Federation of North Rhine-Westphalia and each elect spokespersons who have the right to submit applications to the youth board.

Activities and fields of action

The aim of all activities of the Sportjugend NRW is to promote sporty child and youth work in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is involved in two overarching areas of activity:

  1. child and youth association work
  2. child and youth sport development

The two areas of activity are in turn subdivided into the following fields of activity, in which the activities of Sportjugend NRW in areas such as integration, the promotion of young talent or voluntary services in sport ( voluntary social year , federal voluntary service ) also fit:

  • Children and youth education
  • Participation and volunteer work
  • Member development (associations, unions and clubs)
  • Cooperation with associations - with care and educational institutions

This is one of four long-term programs that the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia launched in 2011. Under NRW moves its CHILDREN! A large part of the activities of the Sportjugend NRW should be combined. The primary goal of the program is to expand the opportunities and offers of exercise for children and young people, with the close connection between all-day schools and the youth work of sports clubs being a special focus.
