Sports field construction

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

While the planning and projecting of sports fields and open spaces in sports facilities is usually the job of landscape architects , the associated construction and maintenance services are offered and carried out by specialist companies for gardening, landscaping and sports field construction .

Essentially, these are lawns , tennis courts, artificial turf and plastic areas (see also DIN 18035 , sports fields) as well as the associated ancillary areas such as paths, meadows and planted areas.

As a playing field surfaces for football and hockey pitches win synthetic turf systems are becoming increasingly important in the sports field construction, the municipal sector in particular antenna sites are replaced with artificial turf - in terms of year-round playability with intensive use in amateur sport. The relatively high construction costs in connection with the development and sometimes uncritical delivery of new products and auxiliary materials necessitate particularly careful planning, expert construction supervision and advice to the operator with regard to the maintenance costs that have to be borne over and above the initial investment.

" Expert (Ö.bv) for sports field construction" is usually a graduate engineer specializing in landscape architecture or a Dr. Ing. From this or a similar subject, whose qualifications for this specialty area have been specially checked and who have been publicly appointed and sworn in by an IHK , an agricultural chamber or a regional council .

Sports field construction costs

The costs of building a sports field depend on the construction method and the materials used. The construction of a new artificial turf pitch (soccer field, standard dimensions: 105 m × 68 m) including drainage, irrigation system, floodlights and a barrier system costs between 500,000 euros and 600,000 euros. When building a natural grass pitch with the same dimensions, costs of around 280,000 euros to 340,000 euros must be factored into the planning. At the beginning of the planning phase, a corresponding usage concept for the sports facility should always be drawn up and checked by a specialist planner.

Construction of grass pitches

DIN 18035-4 (or e.g. in Austria Ö-NORM 2606-1) describes in detail the requirements that a sports turf surface has to meet. Sufficient water permeability and a high degree of vegetation are among the central tasks in sports field construction. Compliance with the standard aims to ensure that sports fields are set up nationwide according to a uniform scheme and that the standard seed mixtures are used without taking regional differences in soil quality or climate into account .

In order to be able to react to the different conditions on site, a distinction is made between various construction methods in sports field construction. This can be the drainage layer construction according to DIN 18035 (for water-impermeable ground) or the construction method close to the ground according to the same standard (for water-permeable or partially permeable subsoil). For less demanding requirements, for example if a football field is only used occasionally or primarily for grassroots football, the ground-level construction outside the DIN standard may be sufficient. The comparatively superficial surface area dispenses with the layer structure and is therefore significantly more sensitive to external influences such as frost and heavy rain.

Damage to the lawn layer can be remedied by regeneration measures and reseeding . All measures relating to new sowing or lawn replacement require the correct preparation of the area in accordance with DIN 18035-4. The preparation of the turf base course for a new sowing or an occupancy of turf is not much different.

When installing underfloor heating , additional requirements must be placed on the heat distribution and the physical soil properties. Professional maintenance of the soil, for example aeration, must also be possible with turf heating. This results in guide values for the installation depth of the underfloor heating, which are taken into account during installation. According to DIN 18035, a level and step-proof drainage system must also be built up; a sprinkler system is also part of the playing field , but it does not have to be integrated into its substructure.
