The Sportunion McDonalds Supervolley Wels is an Austrian volleyball club, which is dedicated to the youth work in Austrian volleyball. The club appears externally as Supervolleys Wels and is based in the Upper Austrian city of Wels . The Heimhalle is located in the Neustadt district . Numerous top players who play today in the Central European League MEVZA and in the Indesit Champions League testify to the successful youth work.

history

In the 80s, volleyball in Wels was synonymous with the Welser Rud (actually a dance and singing group) and the name Volker Derschmidt .

In 1986 the young secondary school teacher Klaus Trappmair came to Wels. After a few years as a trainer at Rud and a short interlude at Union Wels , Trappmair decided to found an independent Wels volleyball club.

International youth tournament

The founding meeting of the U (nion) V (olleyball) V (erein) W (els) took place on January 13, 1993. The association was approved by decision Vr - 1096/1992 and on March 8, 1993 it joined the Upper Austria Regional Union. Only the gym of the HTL Wels was available as a training hall for two evenings a week.

In 2001 the association found a new main sponsor in McDonald’s . The club was renamed to the Sportunion McDonalds Supervolley Wels , which is still run today, in the same year.

The international youth tournament, which is held every spring, has been one of the largest volleyball tournaments for youth teams in Austria for years.

Sporting development

In the first year, two U11 and two U15 female teams and one women's team in the 1st regional league took part in the championship. The teams were trained by Ursula Hübinger and Klaus Trappmair.

In the 1993/94 season, the women's team was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the following season, the success continued with third place in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 1995/96 season, the first men's teams took part in the championship events. 2001/02 was then promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. The remaining in the second highest division was clearly fixed in the following year with third place. In the 2008/09 season, both women and men played for promotion to the 1st Bundesliga. For financial reasons, however, the men had to be removed from the championship in 2009/10.

The women made it to the top division and played in the WVL . They finished the season in ninth place.
