The champions and the teams placed behind them in the national league are eligible to participate. The exact number of starting places in the individual competitions results from a ranking list of the CEV.
The German men are currently in seventh place, which is why champions and runners-up from the previous Bundesliga season are allowed to play in the Champions League. The women occupy ninth place. That's why only the champions from the last Bundesliga season play in the Champions League.
The 28 participants in the men's competition will be drawn in seven groups with four teams each. There they play each against each other with three home and three away games. The first placed in each group as well as the top five runners-up reach the first play-off round. Since the host of the Final Four determined by the CEV is directly qualified for the final round, the next best group runner-up moves up instead. The remaining runners-up and the three best thirds in the group continue to play in the "Challenge Round" of the CEV Cup , the other teams are eliminated.
In the women's competition, the 24 participants are drawn into six groups with four teams each. There they play each against each other with three home and three away games. The two best teams in each group qualify for the first play-off round. If the host of the Final Four is one of them, the next best group third will move up. The remaining four best thirds in the group continue to play in the “Challenge Round” of the CEV Cup , the other teams are eliminated.
The games of the first play-off round with twelve teams are drawn by lots. The teams meet in the knockout system with return games. If there are different winners in the two matches, a golden set may decide. In the next play-off round, the winners will determine the three teams that will qualify for the final four alongside the host. The tournament of the best four teams will be held at a central location within one weekend. The semi-finals will take place on one day, the third-place match and the final on the other.
