The Languages ​​& Dolmetscher Institut München (SDI) is a private, state-recognized specialist academy and vocational school for foreign language professions that trains translators , interpreters and foreign language correspondents. Since 2007, the SDI has also been the supporting company of a private, state-recognized university of applied sciences , the International University SDI Munich .

The SDI is divided into the technical academy, the vocational school and the affiliated technical college. The languages ​​offered are Chinese, English, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German as a foreign language and Arabic as an elective. Various further training courses are offered in the area of ​​seminars & training.

history

Paul Otto Schmidt (1899–1970) was the chief interpreter of the Foreign Office under National Socialism and personal interpreter for Adolf Hitler. After 1945 he was "exonerated", but not taken over into the language service of the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. Thereupon he founded the institute in Munich in 1952 under the motto “From practice for practice”.

In addition to the languages ​​English, French and Spanish offered when the company was founded, Italian was added in 1956, Russian in 1968 and Chinese in 1987. In 1953, the range of courses was expanded to include German as a foreign language . In 1966 it was recognized as a vocational school for the training of interpreters, translators and foreign language correspondents by the BDÜ professional association . State recognition by the Bavarian Ministry of Culture took place in 1973, initially as a vocational school and then in 1977 as a technical academy. In the 2007/2008 winter semester, the “University for Applied Languages ​​- University of Applied Sciences SDI Munich” began teaching, which has been called “International University SDI Munich” since January 2020.
