Günther Haensch

Günther Haensch (born April 22, 1923 in Munich ; † May 10, 2018 in Stadtbergen ) was a German Romance studies , linguist , interpreter and lexicographer .

life and work

Haensch graduated from high school in Munich in 1941 and was for the rest of the war, first in the Reich Labor Service , from 1942 in the Wehrmacht , interpreter and language teacher for French (mainly in occupied France ). He experienced the end of the war in Switzerland and studied from 1945 at the Interpreting Institute of the University of Geneva (1946 and 1947 diplomas as translator , interpreter and conference interpreter for German , French, English and Spanish ). He then studied Romance Studies at the Universities of Barcelona(UdB) and Munich (LMU) and was there in 1954 (when Gerhard Rohlfs ) graduated with the thesis contributions to the knowledge of the Aragonese Catalan language border in the Pyrenees region (dialects of the upper Ribagorza) .

From 1952 Haensch was a co-founder and deputy director of the Language and Interpreting Institute in Munich (from 1967 to 1969 director), at the same time first chief interpreter of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community ( ECSC ) and freelance interpreter at numerous international conferences (including for Konrad Adenauer , Robert Schuman and Alcide De Gasperi ). In 1967 he completed his habilitation at the LMU with the work The French Argots of the Present and from 1968 to 1973 he held the chair for Romance languages ​​and foreign studies at the economics and social science faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Nuremberg (also founding director of the language center of the university) . From 1973 to 1991 he was professor of applied linguistics (Romance studies) at the University of Augsburg (successor: Reinhold Otto Werner ) and head of the university's language center.

Haensch was in 1956 with long-time editor of the magazine Modern Languages and 1967-1971 Chairman of the German Hispanistenverbands . He was a corresponding member of numerous academies in Spain and South America, as well as the holder of the Order Isabel la Católica (Commander's Cross 1973) and the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon (1980), as well as prestigious Spanish science awards.
