history

The Supervisory Board of the Spreewaldbank, 1860

The history of the bank goes back to 1860. At that time, still under royal rule, four business people published an appeal in the Lübbener Kreisblatt, calling for the establishment of an advance payment association. Its tasks should initially be the taking in of funds and the first issuing of loans against bills of exchange. 72 citizens met on October 2, 1860 to draw up a statute. Business began on November 1, 1860, in a small room on Hauptstrasse. The first financial year ended with an annual balance of 102,000 Reichsmarks . 25 years later the balance sheet total had grown to 1.4 million Reichsmarks.

In 1910 the membership grew to 1,000. In 1914, the bank had the building erected at Poststrasse 9 in Lübben, which is still used today as its headquarters together with a new building. After the First World War and the inflation , 84,000 Reichsmarks were left of the total assets of over two million Reichsmarks. At the end of the 1930s the bank was renamed Volksbank . The Second World War , which broke out a few years later , led to a brief closure of the bank at the end of the war. The bank was reopened on November 1, 1946.

The development during the times of the GDR was inhibited by political influences. The bank's options were severely limited. For example, loan extensions required government approval. In 1974, against the will of our members, the name was changed to Genossenschaftskasse für Handwerk und Gewerbe of the GDR . Everything indicated that an affiliation of the cooperative bank to the state bank was intended. In autumn 1989, with the political change , the whole economy began to change. In February 1990, promotional loans in DM were granted to medium-sized companies. The bank was the first credit institute in the former Cottbus district to take its old name back. From the cooperative fund for trade and industry was Volksbank eG .

In 1993 the members of what was then Volksbank eG and Raiffeisenbank eG in Lübben decided to continue on their way together. This decision resulted in a merger that took place on June 30, 1993. The resulting cooperative bank was called Spreewaldbank eG (Volksbank-Raiffeisenbank). At the end of 1998 there was another merger with what was then Raiffeisenbank Oberspreewald eG in Vetschau.

In 2012 a new branch was opened in Bestensee.

In June 2014 the branch in Calau, which had become too small, moved to the rooms of a renovated house at Cottbuser Straße 24. A year later, Spreewaldbank eG decided to build a new branch at the Vetschau location, as the previous premises no longer met the requirements. The building of the former Raiffeisenbank Oberspreewald eG was sold. The new branch opening was celebrated in April 2016.

In May 2019, Spreewaldbank eG created new premises for the branch in Burg on an area of 170 square meters. At the same time, the new building in Raiffeisenstrasse was named Raiffeisenhaus and created urgently needed living space and commercial space.
