Edward Moran
Edward Moran (born August 19, 1829 in Bolton , Greater Manchester , † June 8, 1901 in New York City ) was an American painter of English descent.
Life
When Edward Moran was 15, his family emigrated from England to the United States, initially settling in Philadelphia. After a short occupation in his father's weaving mill, Edward Moran devoted himself to his artistic work. Moran, who traveled a lot, studied from 1862 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London . In 1872 he opened his first studio in New York, from 1878 he again spent a lot of time in Europe and lived in Paris for a few years.
He devoted himself to history painting , with some of his oil paintings he wanted to capture the history of seafaring and was considered one of the best marine painters of his time. Many of Moran's family were also painters, such as his brothers Peter and Thomas Moran or his two sons Léon (1864–1941) and Percy . Edward Moran was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts , the Royal Watercolor Society and, from 1873, an Associate Member of the National Academy, and died in New York City at the age of 71.
