Order : Decapods (decapoda)
Subordination : Pleocyemata
Partial order : Crayfish (anomura)
Superfamily : Galatheoidea
Family : Jumping crabs
Scientific name

Samouelle , 1819

Spring crabs are mostly small crabs, which with their oval carapace and the abdomen ( pleon ) curved under the carapace resemble a mixture of crabs (brachyura) and lobsters (hence the English term "squat lobster" = "squat lobster"). They are always longer than wide and only walk with three pairs of legs, not like the crabs with four. The rostrum is pointed and protruding. The first pair of legs, with the scissors, is usually longer than the body and is carried far forward.

Jumping crabs live in all oceans, three species also in the North Sea . Many of the more than 80 species of the Munidopsis genus are deep-sea dwellers.

Many tropical jumping crabs live closely with other invertebrates , such as fire corals or, in the case of the hairy star jumping crab ( Allogalathea elegans ), with hair stars . In the latter case, the jumping crab always lives on its host, adapts to its color and steals food particles from this. The jumping shrimp Lauriea siagiani lives inside sponges of the genus Xestospongia .

Phylogeny

In the meantime, crayfish are divided into three groups based on their distinctive morphological and genetic characteristics: Galatheidae , Munididae and Munidopsidae . Furthermore, it is assumed that crayfish do not form a monophylum , i.e. are paraphyletic , since the representatives of the Galatheidae have a last common ancestor with the porcelain crabs (Porcellanidae). Spring crabs are therefore grouped together with porcelain crabs in the superfamily Galatheoidea.
