Spyridon Vikatos
Spyridon Vikatos , rare: Bikatos ( Greek Σπυρίδων Βικάτος ; born September 24, 1878 Argostoli on Kefalonia ; † June 6, 1960 in Athens ) was a Greek painter . Vikatos was one of the last Greek representatives of the Munich school .
Life
With the help of financial support from Germanos, the metropolitan of Kefalonia (and later from Athens), Vikatos studied as a student of Nikiforos Lytras and Spyridon Prosalentis at the Athens School of Fine Arts . He continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Nikolaus Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz . From 1909 to 1940 he taught at the Athens School of Art. His pupils were Telemachos Kanthos and Spyros Daglaridis .
His works are mainly portraits and genre painting with a clear influence of the Munich School , but also the Flemish School of the 17th century.
Vikatos was friends with Alexander Koester , a colleague from Munich. He portrayed him and advised him to see a doctor about his ear problems. He donated 30 paintings to the National Gallery in Athens, his legacy is in the Athens School of Art, for which he donated the Vikatos scholarship for particularly talented students to study abroad.
