Stéphane Blanquet (born May 15, 1973 in France ) is a French artist.

Life

The artist Stéphane Blanquet, born near Paris in 1973 , has been creating art installations, urban art, cartoons, theater and books since the 1980s. The 3D film The Horror of the Amazon impressed him so much that since then his artistic interest has focused on various aspects of popular culture, e.g. B. magazines, magic tricks, optical illusions and fairground performances.

In the 1990s, Blanquet was both an artist and a publisher and became a leading figure in the underground scene at the time. His works of art were exhibited at the Regard Moderne gallery / bookstore (Paris, France) as well as in the USA and Canada in 1993 and 1996, and in Blab! (USA), AX (Japan) and published in European media. At the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême in 1996 he was awarded the renowned Alph Art du fanzine Prize for his work as a publisher.

A retrospective of his art was held in 2001 at the Maison de la culture de Tournai in Belgium. Numerous individual and group events followed for a decade: Blab! Exhibition in San Diego and the Lucerne Museum, the Cult Fiction exhibition in the Hayward Gallery in London and six other venues in the UK, a solo event at the Fumetto Festival in Lucerne and another in Aix-en-Provence .

Excerpt from the work in the MuseumsQuartier

In 2008 Blanquet created a large mural in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier - his first foray into urban art. In 2009 he presented a large installation for the “Quintet” exhibition at the Musée d'Art Contemporain in Lyon. In 2010 he spent three weeks in Japan, where he had a solo exhibition at the Span Art Gallery in Tokyo and took part in numerous other events. He also presented installations in Singapore: 2012, “Distorted forest” at the Night Lights Festival and 2013, the “Glossy Dreams in Depths” installation at the Singapore Art Museum, with 250 m² and 100,000 visitors.

In 1997, Blanquet entered the field of cartoons and created Le mélange des couleurs for the French channel Canal + . The Les resuscitation DVD, a collection of his entire animated films up to that time, was released of 2005. In 2012 he was invited by Sup Info Com Arles University to create the film Cornea with a team of students . After its completion, the film was shown at numerous festivals and exhibitions - including 2014 at the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston .

In 2001, Cornélius published his first illustrated novel, La nouvelle aux pis . Numerous other publications followed: Le Noir Seigneur , Bouquet Bonheur , Chochottes and others. In 2007 La Vénéneuse aux deux éperons appeared , also published by Cornélius. This year the work was chosen as one of the ten most aesthetic books in France (Concours des plus beaux livres français). Several titles from it were published in Japan, the USA, Spain, Italy, Brazil, etc.

Since 2002 Blanquet has also created works for a younger audience. He illustrated texts for French publishers such as La vieille Chéchette by Louise Michel (2006, Albin Michel) and The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen (2010, Gallimard). He also created installations and works of art: in 2013, in Singapore, he exhibited an installation at the Art Garden Festival for Children and Families, hosted by the Singapore Art Museum.

In 2005 Blanquet met Jean Lambert-Wild . At the Comédie de Caen , a French national theater, he worked on stage and in costume design, wrote scripts and directed. The piece Comment ai-je pu tenir là-dedans, which he co-wrote and co-designed, was performed with great success at the Festival d'Avignon in 2008 and more than 200 times, including in Japan and Korea. He is currently working on a new play, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III .

In 2007 Blanquet was appointed Ocular Director, an art director responsible for visualization and branding for the Comédie de Caen. The image he created contributed significantly to the fact that the number of visitors tripled in five years. Today he is the art director of the Théâtre de l'Union in Limoges, where he succeeded Jean Lambert-Wild .

Since 2007 he has been publishing monographs (Roland Topor, Gary Panter, Tanaami Keiichi, ...), magazines (Tendon Revolver, Muscle Carabine, Tranchée Racine, ...) and various art objects under the United Dead Toys brand together with the publisher United Dead Artists. He acted as a publisher of works by more than 200 artists in around 100 publications. The magazine Tranchées Racine has a circulation of 4,000 copies. He also created a newspaper kiosk for his publications, which is often displayed in museums and cultural centers.

More recently, Blanquet has been working with commercial companies. In 2014, he created a work of art for Paramount Pictures to market the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle film. At the same time, he entered the world of fashion when he worked with the Belgian fashion label KRJST.
