Stéphane Gsell came from a Swiss Protestant family. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure from 1883 to 1886 and conducted research from 1886 to 1890 at the École française de Rome , where he wrote a fundamental study on the Roman emperor Domitian . In 1890 he received a teaching position at the École des Lettres in Algiers . The following year he was involved in excavations in Tipasa . He then accompanied Henri Gaillot from 1893 to 1894 on an expedition to the area north of the Aurès Mountains. Their findings were published in the Mélanges de l'École française de Rome and provide information about the spread of Donatism in the region. From 1895 to 1905 Gsell was a professor at the École d'Algier . From 1901 to 1932 he was antiques inspector for Algeria and in 1901 published his important two-volume study Monuments antiques d'Algérie , which lists all known ancient buildings in the region. In 1902 his work Atlas archéologique de l'Algérie followed , which he completed in 1911. The work contains 50 maps and 500 pages of commentary. As a professor, Gsell taught North African history at the Collège de France from 1912 to 1932 . In Paris he began his Histoire ancienne de l'Afrique du Nord . The work appeared in eight volumes up to his death, but it only lasted until the end of the Mauritanian kingship of Juba II.

Gsell is considered a pioneer of French exploration of Roman North Africa. His monograph on Domitian, which for the first time also systematically evaluated coins and inscriptions, laid the foundation for modern research on this emperor. He also directed important excavations of an Etruscan cemetery in Vulci .
