Pestle
The pestle is a slim beer glass that widens towards the top . The pestle is a Dortmund specialty. In the original there is no filling line , the capacity is not specified and is between 0.1 and 0.18 liters . A pest contains freshly tapped beer, which is drunk in between.
history
Dortmund's city center was separated from Dortmund's northern part of the city by the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft railway line and initially there was no underpass at the Burgtor in the direction of Münsterstrasse. People who wanted to cross the railway line in the direction of Nordstadt often had to wait here in front of closed barriers. Due to the busy railway line, some of the barriers were only opened very briefly and irregularly. A landlord in an adjoining pub recognized the potential and from then on served the waiting citizens the beer in a quick-to-consume pint.
The pestle, as a small, quick-to-consume amount of beer, became popular very quickly and was then offered by many other pubs in Dortmund.
Today the pestle is offered as a common sales unit , especially in the pubs around the Old Market , even if it is often not on the menu.
Normalization
In 2004, due to a complaint from a guest in the Dortmund Ratsschänke, the responsible calibration office in Hagen decided that the filling quantity must be labeled according to the calibration law . Since then, a pestle has to be calibrated in the catering industry and must have the indication “0.1 liter” (in the middle of the glass).
