St-André

Saint-André is the cemetery chapel of Andlau ( department Bas-Rhin ) in the region of Grand Est . The Church has been inscribed on the French Heritage Register since 1978.

Building history and description

The chapel was under the patronage of St-Sauveur ( Redeemer ) until 1865 parish church of Eichhoffen . It goes back to a Carolingian building that was left as a royal church of the Etival Abbey in 884 , which in turn was subordinate to the Andlau Abbey. In 1462 the chapel of Andlau Abbey was incorporated.

The chapel has a Gothic east tower from the first half of the 13th century, which is an earlier choir tower . In the vaulted former choir there are remains of wall paintings from the end of the 14th century, which depict the Annunciation and the Passion of Christ. The medieval nave was replaced by a simple baroque hall with a west choir around 1783, so the traditional east-facing of the chapel was abandoned with the new building, and the choir tower was made a pure bell tower.
