The Church of St-Martin and the churchyard

The Roman Catholic church of St-Martin in Auve , a French municipality in the Marne department , was built in the 12th century and has been a listed monument since 1916 .

history

According to a document from the cartular of Toussaints Abbey , a first church under the name altare de Summa Alva was built between 1131 and 1142 at an unknown location not far from today's church.

The current building was erected in the 12th century and expanded until the 15th century. The apse, the pillars of the nave and several vaults in the aisle date from the 13th century. During a renovation in the 15th century, the west facade was built and the southern part of the transept was reconstructed. In the 16th century, the aisles and the northern part of the transept were rebuilt. The sacristy was added in the 19th century.

After the church was set on fire by German troops on September 6, 1914, a pantry in the village was converted into a chapel by French soldiers with furniture from the church of St-Martin. The church underwent extensive reconstruction in the 1920s, and the restoration of the main altar was completed in 1931.

The church of St-Martin was placed under monument protection on February 7, 1916 as Monument historique .

From 2017 to 2019 the church of St-Martin was extensively restored. During archaeological excavations in 2017/2018, bones were discovered that presumably point to a burial site from the Middle Ages.

Architecture and equipment

Behind the stone main altar is a large wooden crucifix .

At the corners of the choir, two pillars are decorated with bud capitals , which support statues of Eligius von Noyon and Mary, the mother of Jesus . A statue of Anthony of Padua stands at the entrance to the nave . In the nave, a window shows Martin of Tours sharing his coat. Martin, venerated as a saint, is represented in a statue, as are Joseph of Nazareth and Catherine Labouré . The church has two side chapels in honor of Mary and Martin. The Lady Chapel has an altar, a reliquary , statues of Maria and Therese von Lisieux and a colorful window depicting Dominic .

The Stations of the Cross, made of wood-colored plaster, on the walls of the nave were donated in 1926 by parishioners whose names are under each representation. There are also two stone stations of the cross from the 12th century in the side chapels.

The entrance portal from the 15th century has partially destroyed plant motifs and empty wall niches .
