St-Martin is a Roman Catholic parish church in Pont-à-Mousson in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in France . The church was originally built as a monastery church of the Antonite Order and has been classified as a monument historique since 1840.

history

The Church of St. Martin was built by the Order of Antonites in the Gothic style under the patronage of St. Anthony the Great . The building is characterized by an unusual size and external effect for the hospital order. The church was consecrated in September 1335 by Daniel, Vicar General of the Bishop of Metz .

The church was built as a three-aisled basilica with a four-bay nave, which is adjoined by a narrow transept. The transept arms do not extend beyond the width of the aisle walls. The transept is adjoined by a choir of three bays, which closes in the east with a polygonal apse on seven sides. In the 15th century, the house of God was expanded to include the representative double tower facade with a west portal and rose window in the Flamboyant Gothic style and the rood screen inside . The rood screen was later implemented and is now located in the west under the organ gallery.

In 1572 the church was opened by Pope Gregory XIII in the course of the decline of the Antonite Order . handed over to the Jesuit order and incorporated into the University of Lorraine , which he founded. In 1784 the church finally became the parish church of the district on the right bank of the Moselle under the patronage of St. Martin of Tours . The church still serves this function today.

A group of figures from the 15th century depicting the Entombment of Christ is classified as a single monument as a monument historique.
