St-Michel is the Roman Catholic parish of Roussillon , a French commune in the Vaucluse department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . The classical baptistery is classified as a monument historique .

history

The church, consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel , who is also the patron saint of the village, was probably built in place of an older wooden predecessor at the turn of the 11th to the 12th century in the Romanesque style as a single-nave building. The church was provided with a simple barrel vault , which had to be renewed in the further course of the Middle Ages.

In the 14th century, the walls of the nave were broken through in order to build chapels for various saints, but these were also intended to absorb the thrust of the vault and give the building stability. The chapels were vaulted in a semicircular arc perpendicular to the nave. The west facade was added in the 17th century. Overall, the building work now gives the church the impression of a basilica . In 1791 the sculptor Alexis Poitevin created the furnishings for the classical baptistery. In 1858 the choir collapsed and had to be renewed.
