St. Aegidius (courtyard)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Church of St. Egidius in Hof is probably the oldest church building in the Altlandkreis Oberviechtach , a Romanesque country church with a secular upper floor .

history

The church was built in the 12th century in a purely Romanesque style. The origin of the village of Hof was a fortified Meierhof of the Counts of Sulzbach, which belonged to the Murach lordship . Immediately next to it, this church was built, which should initially only have been accessible from this courtyard via a wooden bridge. The church may have served as a refuge for the villagers. The entrance, which is still recognizable today and was originally higher up, was later walled up. The main entrance is now further down, in the middle under the bell tower on the west side. A side entrance is on the south side.

The church later served as a parish church with a cemetery for Oberviechtach ; this cemetery was on the property of today's "Hutzlerhof". Around 1600 the roof of the church was destroyed and left to decay. Pastor Vorster referred to it in the land register from 1650 as a pile of stones . In 1658 the church was rebuilt. It burned down in 1835 and was restored in 1838.

legend

According to a legend, the church was built by giants because the church walls consist of huge boulders.
