St. Bartholomew Church

The St. Bartholomew Church is a Protestant, listed church and is located on the northern outskirts of Unteresselbach , a district of the district town of Neustadt an der Aisch , at the foot of the Eulenberg.

history

The coins found during the church renovation in 1640 indicate the old age of the church. There was probably a chapel here as early as 1051, which was later expanded into a church.

The church is first mentioned as a parish seat in 1350. The entrance portal, the north windows and the door to the sacristy date from the Gothic period. The youngest of the three bells in the church dates from 1402. The three bells survived all wars unscathed.

In earlier years the church was the mother church for the churches in Altheim, Dottenheim, Hambühl and Kaubenheim.

On April 17, 1518, Martin Luther is said to have stopped by in Unteresselbach on a hike from Wittenberg to Heidelberg. Since the pastor refused entry to the church, Martin Luther prayed under the linden tree in front of the church. Since then this tree has been called Lutherlinde. In 2002 the old linden tree had to be removed due to its old age. However, a new linden tree was planted and a bronze plaque was put up.

architecture

The building has a prominent tower on the east side that towers above the town. The organ stands on the upper of the two galleries.

Furnishing

There is a two-column altar in the chancel. This dates from 1703 and was made by Georg Ansorg from Wilhermsdorf. The altar shows a portrait of a crucifixion group with two women.

The historic baptismal font was made of stone by the priest and artistic sculptor Lietzheimer († 1616) from Unternesselbach. It bears the inscription: "Let the little children come to me". Lietzheimer was transferred from Herrnneuses to Unterstesselbach in 1594 .

In addition, the death shield for a Neustetter called Stürmer von Unterstesselbach from 1493 is worth seeing.
