The St. Jakobskirche is a Protestant church in Frankfurt am Main . The hall construction in the old town center of the Bockenheim district is a work of the late 18th century . In contrast to most of the Jakobskirchen, which are consecrated to the Apostle Jakobus , the Bockenheimer Kirche is named after the progenitor Jakob .

The oldest church building at this point is mentioned as early as 1365, at that time as a branch church of the Frankfurt Bartholomäusstift . In 1434 Bockenheim fell to the Counts of Hanau-Münzenberg , who introduced the Reformation in 1523 and converted to Calvinism in 1595 . Since the Calvinists were not allowed to build their own churches in the strictly Lutheran Frankfurt for a long time, the Bockenheim Church was also used as a place of worship for the Reformed in Frankfurt from 1608 until the German Reformed Church and the French Reformed Church (1787 to 1790) were built. In 1818 the parish accepted the Hanauer Union , and Calvinists and Lutherans formed a united parish .

At the end of the 18th century the church was renovated, and in 1853 the characteristic tower with its square floor plan was built. After the incorporation of Bockenheim in 1895, the Protestant church in Bockenheim remained in the consistorial district of Kassel , which formed its own Protestant regional church from Lutheran, Reformed and United communities. Because of the strong population growth in Bockenheim, another Protestant church, the Markuskirche, was built in the south of Bockenheim from 1909 to 1912 . On December 14, 1928, the Evangelical Regional Church in Hessen-Kassel ceded its Bockenheim parish and the Fechenheim parish, whose parish had now all been incorporated into the city of Frankfurt, to the Evangelical Regional Church in Frankfurt am Main . In September 1944, the St. Jakobskirche was destroyed with the exception of the outer walls in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main and restored between 1954 and 1957.

In 1997, the Evangelical St. Jakobs Congregation and the Evangelical Markus Congregation merged again to form a church congregation that bears the name Evangelical Congregation Bockenheim . Today, the St. Jakobskirche is again the only church in this parish, while the Markuskirche has been redesigned to become the Annunciation center of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau . From 2003 to 2005 the St. Jakobskirche, the adjoining parish hall and the outdoor facilities were extensively rebuilt and modernized.

Furnishing

The most important adornment of the church are the glass windows created by Charles Crodel . The closed cycle of images emphasizes the garden-hall-like space with flower-like colored picture elements, which close in detail to the narrative picture program. The choir windows are dedicated to the history of salvation , the north windows to the legend of Jacob in the manner of the Legenda aurea .

organ

The organ of the Jakobskirche was built in 1982 by the organ building company Förster & Nicolaus (Lich). The instrument has 23 registers on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
