The St.-Johannes-Hospital is a Catholic hospital in Dortmund with 13 specialist departments.
history
First considerations for the construction of a Catholic hospital date back to 1848. Donations were collected and a lottery was held to raise the necessary funds for a hospital.
Finally, the hospital was opened in 1851 by the Dortmund Propsteigemeinde as a Catholic hospital with seven beds. In 1857 they moved into a larger building near the Propsteigemeinde.
On June 13, 1871, the foundation stone for the construction of a new hospital was laid directly outside the old ramparts of the city of Dortmund. The completion and opening of the new house is dated November 28, 1872. In 1893 the hospital was enlarged by a first extension, a second extension in 1899 increased the number of beds from 166 to 209. Shortly before the First World War , the south wing of the hospital was built. The number of beds is now 600, a number that has remained almost unchanged to this day. During the First World War, the hospital was also used to care for war victims; despite its high capacity, the hospital was at times significantly overcrowded. Between 1924 and 1932, St. Johannes was expanded into a full hospital.
During the Second World War , the hospital was affected by the Allied bombing raids on Dortmund. The attack on March 12, 1945 completely destroyed the south wing and the nurses' home. Forced laborers from the Todt Organization were also used to repair the hospital .
For a long time, nuns from the Order of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent de Paul were responsible for caring for the patients .
In the past few decades, the hospital has been continuously expanded with additional wings. In the entrance area, a model explains the entire building complex.
