The Church of St. John Paul II (Polish Kościół św. Jana Pawła II ) in Kraków is a Catholic church on 32 Totus Tuus Street in the Łagiewniki district .

History and architecture

The construction of the church was initiated in 2008 by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz . Pope Benedict XVI laid the foundation stone . The structure, essentially an octagonal central building , is based on the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna. The church was consecrated by Cardinal Dziwisz in 2016 on the patronage of John Paul II, who was canonized in 2014 . Above the portal is the famous appeal in Latin from the Pope's first sermon on October 22, 1978: NOLITE TIMERE · APERITE PORTAS CHRISTO  - “Do not be afraid ! Open the gates for Christ! ”The two squat corner towers that flank the portal are inscribed with VERITAS  -“ Truth ”- and CARITAS  -“ Love ”.

The church is part of the John Paul II Center in Krakow. Not far to the north is the Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy .
