St. Laurentius Chapel (Rohrbach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Laurentius Chapel in Rohrbach , a district of the large district town of Sinsheim in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was inaugurated in 1966. The Catholic community had previously used a chapel in the Rohrbach town hall since the late 18th century and has a historic bell from the second half of the 15th century.

history

For a long time, the Catholic parish had its prayer room on the upper floor of the old town hall, which was built in 1768/69 as a wine press building . The roof turret of the town hall was owned by the Catholic church fund. The premises were sufficient until after the Second World War, when the Catholic community grew rapidly due to the influx of displaced persons and refugees and the old town hall gradually fell into disrepair. Today's chapel outside the town center was planned from 1962 and built from 1964. The chapel was consecrated on June 19, 1966.

Bells

Initially, the congregation did not have its own bells, instead they had the right to use the Lutheran church bells. When they moved into a prayer room in today's Old Town Hall , there was initially a bell in the roof turret of the building, and a second was added in 1802. Before the First World War , the community had two bells. The older of the bells was a bronze bell with a diameter of 46 cm, which is attributed to the master of the minuscule bell from Ladenburg from the second half of the 15th century and bears the inscription AVE MARIA DU BIST GNADEN FOL . The second bell, which existed until 1917, was cast in 1776 by Anselm Franz Speck in Heidelberg from an older bell from 1716.

During the First World War, the bell from the 15th century had to be delivered for armament purposes, but returned unharmed and was placed back in the roof turret in 1932. During the Second World War , the Speck Bell from 1776 had to be delivered; it was destroyed in the Hamburg bell cemetery in 1945 .

On the occasion of moving into the newly built Laurentius Chapel with its free-standing, pointed bell tower, a new two-bell bell was cast by Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling in Heidelberg in 1967 . The larger bell strikes f '', is 60 cm in diameter and weighs 149 kg. The smaller bell has the strike sound as '', a diameter of 51 kg and a weight of 86 kg. The old bell from the 15th century is also still in the possession of the Catholic community, but is no longer rung, but has been stored in different locations since the church was rebuilt.
