The St. Marien Church in Großenkneten is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church . Parish of Großenkneten, which belongs to the Delmenhorst / Oldenburg-Land parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg .

history

A church was probably founded in Großenkneten as early as the 9th century. Excavations revealed previous buildings from before 1000 and around 1300. The written sources indicate that there was a Romanesque church building that was enlarged in the 15th century.

The current church was built between 1819 and 1820 using wall remains from a previous building. The southern transverse wing dates from the end of the 15th century. The tower on the west side was added in 1873.

Building description

The newer part of the church is a plastered hall church with a wooden ceiling and galleries on all four sides. The southern transverse wing made of brick is late Gothic and has a groin vault . Outside there are buttresses made of sandstone .

The church tower is made of brick, its helmet is covered with slate .

The altar mural measuring 9 by 10 meters was created in 1965 by the artist Heinrich Schwarz .

Bells

There are two bells in the tower that were cast in 1812 and 1872, respectively.
