During the Second World War , the church was hit by bombs during a major attack on the night of Pentecost Sunday from June 12th to 13th, 1943 and burned out. The building was last hit on November 4, 1944. In 1951 it was decided to entrust the reconstruction to the Bochum architect Kurt Hubert Vieth . A worker was killed while working. The church was rededicated on October 3, 1953.

Profanation

St. Mary's (2007)

The church is one of the churches affected by the structural reform of the diocese of Essen. In May 2000 it became known within the church that the church was to be demolished. The last high mass in the parish church took place on September 22, 2002. It was profaned in the same year .

The church was closed, the windows with stained glass from Derix were expanded and valuable wall mosaics were largely destroyed. Art historians and many parishioners fought for the preservation of St. Mary's Church. Meanwhile, the building was left to decay. At times the conversion to a retirement home or a chamber music hall was discussed. From 2010 to 2012 the Urbanatix ensemble used the church as a training facility.

In the end - thanks in no small part to the efforts of general music director Steven Sloane - the decision was made to open the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr u. a. to be built as a venue for the Bochum Symphony Orchestra . In the design by the Stuttgart office of Bez + Kock Architekten , the profaned Marienkirche was included as a foyer between the two halls (concert hall and small hall) of the music center that opened in October 2016. The main entrance to the Musikforum is via the south and north sides of the choir on Viktoriastraße.
