The St. Marien Church is a church in Ludwigshafen , Hohenzollernstraße 2. It was built from 1926 to 1928 as a Catholic church. It has been a Greek Orthodox church since 2007 .

In 1924, the German Society for Christian Art eV (Munich) launched a "competition to obtain designs for three new churches with a rectory and catechist's hall in Ludwigshafen". The competition was won by an expressionist design by the Munich architect Albert Boßlet , who is already experienced in Catholic sacred buildings and which was carried out under the supervision of Karl Lochner. The east-facing, three-aisled basilica has a wide central nave under a hipped roof and low aisles under pent roofs . The tower envisaged in the competition design was not built.

High bronze figures of Mary and the apostles Peter and Paul by the Munich sculptor Hans Panzer (1892–1964) stand above the main portal . Only some of the furnishings date from the time it was built: a marble angel from Panzer, an Antonius relief by Carl Caire and wooden reliefs in the aisles by August Weckbecker (1888–1939). The church building reflected the new trends in the architecture of its time and was also of national importance.

When the war damage caused in 1943 was repaired, the choir was changed and the pointed barrel was replaced by a flat-arched barrel.

After the turn of the millennium, the three parishes of the northern inner city, Holy Trinity , St. Mary and Holy Cross, were merged and two churches were advertised for sale. The Greek Orthodox parish "Annunciation" acquired St. Mary's Church. The rectory and the organ were not sold, as was a statue of the Virgin Mary, which remains in the church on permanent loan. In a solemn service in 2007, the diocesan administrator Otto Georgens personally handed over the deed of title to Metropolitan Augoustinos .

The organ , built by Klais in 1941 , was moved to St. Joseph's Church in 2011 because organ music does not play a role in the Greek Orthodox liturgy .
