The Evangelical Lutheran St. Mary's Church is in Thunum , a place in the Stedesdorf community , which is part of the East Frisian joint community of Esens .

history

The church had at least two previous buildings. The first was larger and was probably built from arched tufa in the 13th century . Only the belfry of the closed type standing away from the church has survived from this building. The oldest dated grave slab in East Frisia has been preserved on the tower, which indicates the death of Chief Ede Reentzen in 1394. Before the Reformation, two clergymen served in the church, one of whom held the title of vicar .

The second church was probably built in 1558 and its western part was made of tuff stone, which was probably taken over from the previous church. The building was about 27 meters long and about 7 meters wide. In the 19th century this building was so dilapidated that it had to be demolished. The present church was then built in 1842.

The parish of Thunum merged with Stedesdorf in 1971 to form the parish of Stedesdorf with a total of 1,400 members.

Furnishing

The organ

The interior is closed at the top with a cove ceiling .

The pulpit is in Thunum above the altar. Annunciation and sacrament are symbolically linked. In front of the altar there is a grave slab made of bluestone lying in the floor . It is dedicated to the rector and pastor Onno Gruben zu Thunum, who died in 1731. The grave slab of Chief Edo Reentzen, who died in 1394, was attached to the bell tower from the previous church . In addition, two oil paintings from the 17th century and two death shields from the Glan family were taken over. The two epitaphs are dedicated to Freiherr von Glan († 1718) and Isabella von Glan († 1771).

The wood baptism is a work of the 19th century. The organ was built in 1855 by the organ builder Arnold Rohlfs . The instrument has six registers (Principal 4 ′, Gedackt 8 ′, Flute travers 8 ′, Flute 4 ′, Forest Flute 2 ′, Dulcian 8 ′) on a manual (C – f 3 ), four of which are still predominantly original. The pedal (C – a 0 ), a so-called knife-back pedal , is attached.
