history

There is evidence of three previous wooden buildings on the artificially created church throws . These go back to the 12th century. During this time, the eastern half of today's Kirchwarft was raised as a sand hill about 2.5 meters high. This formed the building platform for the first church, which was later destroyed by fire. The successor building was also made of wood. It was about 4 meters wide and was also prey to the flames. In the later 12th century the church yard was increased and a new wooden church was built.

In the second half of the 13th century, the Kirchwarft was considerably enlarged, especially in a westerly direction. After this work was completed, a foundation of granite blocks was laid on the hill and the first stone church was built on it. This was about 23 meters long, about 7 meters wide and had a height of 20 meters. The walls were just over 3 meters thick. This building was built in the Romanesque style. At the eastern gable it had a semicircular choir-like ending. In each gable there were arched windows as well as a arched door and three small pointed arch windows on each of the two long sides. Over the centuries, the building deteriorated more and more, so that it had to be demolished in the 19th century. Only the distant bell tower from the 15th century was preserved.

In 1862, today's Maria Magdalena Church was built as a single-nave hall church with a retracted semicircular apse . Like its predecessor church, this was given a semicircular shape and a round vault.

Today the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Fulkum has around 200 parishioners. It is an independent parish that is parishly connected to Esens.

Furnishing

The organ

A ceiling made of wooden beams with laid-on floorboards closes off the church interior at the top.

Even if today's building is quite young, it still contains objects of interest in art history. This includes the oldest object in the church, the simple baptismal font. It was made of granite in the 12th century and probably already stood in one of the first wooden buildings that preceded it. The wooden cover of the baptismal font is a work from 1636.

The altarpiece includes a godparent donated in 1698 by Frerich Claesen, Habbe Folkerts, Behrent Eggen, Onno Siebeth and Dirk Behrens. The altarpiece shows the crucified in the style of peasant painting. The two chandeliers in the church date from 1696 and 1996. The Esensian organ builder Arnold Rohlfs built the organ with six registers in 1866. Through major changes in disposition, Alfred Führer gave her a new, then contemporary sound character in 1969, which in 2011 was brought closer to the original intonation by Martin ter Haseborg .
