Church in Werdum

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Nicolai Church in Werdum , Samtgemeinde Esens ( East Friesland ), was built in 1327 on a terp .

history

The church bears the patronage of Nicholas of Myra , who was considered the patron saint of sailors, merchants and children. The rectangular one-room hall was built on the foundations of an older previous building and, with its corner pilasters and richly decorated cornice, has elements of the Romano-Gothic transition style. The two arched portals on the north side are bricked up today. The Gothic polygonal high choir with anterior yoke and ribbed vault from 1476 was added to the straight east wall during the rule of Chief Hicko Boyungs von Edenserloog. Of the once two hagioscopes , only the southern one remained, the northern one is walled up on the outside, but can be seen on the inside with its brick frame. In the course of a restoration, the original painting of the vault was largely exposed. In 1763 the bell tower with a height of 32 meters was built on the west side, which also serves as an entrance to the church. The tower is crowned by an open lantern on a flat pyramid. The large, arched windows in the romantic historicism style were broken into in 1869.

Furnishing

Diepenbrock organ (1898)

Originally the interior had three bays, which were later replaced by a flat beamed ceiling. The chandelier was donated by an Ommen family in 1692. Two more had to be surrendered in 1943 and were melted down. They were replaced in 2002. The pulpit dates from 1670, the altar reredos and baptismal stands date from the second half of the 18th century. Part of the old granite baptismal font was taken over. The altarpiece with the Lord's Supper was made in 1796 by Antonie Röntgen, b. Table leg created. The original altarpiece from 1573 has been preserved and is now hanging in the choir room. The organ was built by Johann Diepenbrock in 1897/98 with 14 stops on two manuals and pedal and mechanical cone chests . It is completely preserved and was thoroughly repaired by Martin Haspelmath in 1987/88 .
