location

The church is centrally located in the former round village of Breselenz ( Jameln municipality ) in the Elbtalaue municipality in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district. To the north of the church is the parish hall; to the northeast the old rectory.

history

The first church in Breselenz was built around 1400. At first it was a simple wooden church, which was later replaced by a solid structure. From the altarpieces it can be concluded that it was most likely a St. Mary's Church. During the Thirty Years' War , the church was looted and damaged by mercenaries from the Electorate of Saxony.

On May 15, 1859, the community decided to rebuild the church building. The result was a design by the agricultural inspector Robert Friedrich Rhien , who envisaged a five-axis brick building with high three-legged arched windows, flat wooden ceilings and an organ gallery facing west. In 1860 the new church was completed. In 1953 the interior of the church was repainted and further renovation measures were carried out, as the walls had damp spots due to a strong attack of saltpeter. From 2005 to 2007 another renovation and redesign took place, in which parts of the original 19th century furnishings were restored, especially in the choir room.

The neo-Romanesque hall building is completed above with a wooden ceiling. The organ and numerous visitors can be found on the unusually large gallery . The choir is introduced by a Romanesque round arch, which is decorated with a tendril, and is separated from the nave by an elevation with two steps. To the left is the pulpit with hatched images of Jesus and the evangelists and some coat of arms of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz von dem Berge. The Marian altar can be seen from the front. After the renovation from 2005 to 2007, three windows in the choir that were bricked up in the 1960s were re-installed based on old photographs. The front area of the church is furnished with chairs, while there are wooden benches in the rear area and on the gallery.

Furnishing

The carved altar from the early 16th century, the so-called Marienaltar, was transferred from the old church to the new one. It is the most valuable piece of equipment. There are two coats of arms on both sides, and three reliefs from the life of Mary and the Passion are depicted in the wings .
