The first building of the chapel was built by the Abbey of St. Maximin under Abbot Antonius Drubein (Antonius de Tribulis (Drublein / Drubheim) from the patrician family "zum Treubel" from Strasbourg) and dates from 1453 to 1482. The central axis of the The chapel faces exactly east . According to a document copied by hand by Philipp Jakob Bechtel (1832–1842 pastor in Taben-Rodt), the Michaelskapelle received a new altar , a new door and a picture in 1732 under Willibrordus Scheffer (1731–1738 pastor in Taben-Rodt) .

Further renovations took place in 1968 and 2000 in order to largely preserve the original condition of the building.

legend

According to legend, a knight was on the run from his enemies when his horse stalled in front of the deep abyss that opened up here. In his almost hopeless situation he prayed to St. Michael and vowed to build a chapel if he received help. Then he gave his horse the spurs and bravely jumped over the floods of the Saar. His enemies could not follow him. But he reached the other bank unharmed and built this chapel here, which he dedicated to St. Michael.

building

The core of the chapel is a late Gothic building that originally served as a cemetery chapel . The simple plastered construction is provided with visible, offset sandstone ashlar stones at the corners and vaulted inside with cross ribs . A keystone with a coat of arms shows the coat of arms of Manderscheid .

The interior of the chapel has a width of 3.73 m and a height of 4.04 m on the west side (entrance). The length of the interior (including the choir ) is 7.10 m. The altar stands on a surface raised by 0.15 m, which can be reached via a step. The distance of the altar plate (1.76 m × 0.86 m) from the choir wall is 0.99 m and thus offers sufficient space for the celebrating cleric (with his face facing the congregation).

The three lead-glazed windows in the three-sided choir were designed by the artist Prof. E. Kraemer, Trier, and built into the existing tracery during the restoration in 1968 .

In the west-facing entrance side there is a Gothic arched portal with a pointed round arch . It does not contain the year, is 1.21 m wide and 2.34 m high. A brick-built, square roof turret with a bell, open on two sides, rises above the gable .

In the course of the year the chapel is included in the church celebrations. On the day of the patronage of St. Quiriakus (church patron of Taben-Rodt), according to the centuries-old tradition of local Quiriakus veneration, the shrine with the bones of St. Quiriakus is carried to Michael's chapel as part of a pilgrimage .
