St. Thomas Church

The St. Thomas Church is a church in the north of the city of Wolfenbüttel , whose community belongs to the Wolfenbüttel provost in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig .

The community was founded in 1960. It is the first new establishment with its own name in Wolfenbüttel since 1663. Before that, the area belonged to the St. Trinity community . However, it was not until 1967 that the community center with church , group rooms and kindergarten was inaugurated. During the transition period, the services took place in the auditorium of the Braunschweig / Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences . The community currently has 3,800 members, making it the second largest Evangelical Lutheran church in Wolfenbüttel.

inner space

In the almost square church space, a triptych with representations of the Easter message hangs on steel cables above the altar . The cross on the altar also has no representation of Christ crucified. The St. Thomas Church is an Easter church.

organ

In 1970 the Hillebrand organ was consecrated . The neo-baroque instrument (21 registers , two manuals , pedal ) was digitally expanded in 2000 (50 registers, three manuals, pedal) and received an additional console in the front of the church.

Church music

The "Thomaskantorei" with around 70 members is one of the region's renowned, demanding choirs. Approx. 40 children and young people sing in the children's and youth choirs. The "Trombone Choir Wolfenbüttel", the largest trombone orchestra within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig, is based in the St. Thomas Church. Cantor Hans-Hermann Haase is in charge.

Youth work

There are currently four scout groups of the Association of Christian Scouts , a musical group and a youth club.

Bell tower

The bell tower, like the church, is made of red brick . However, in 2007 it had to be provided with a jacket made of copper sheet , as the stone and the grout showed very strong signs of weathering.
