The Egidius Church in Wroclaw is the oldest preserved building in the city. The Roman Catholic church dates from the first half of the 13th century and is dedicated to St. Aegidius . Today it belongs to the Parafia św. Jana Chrzciciela (German parish of St. John the Baptist ). The Aegidius Church is located on the Wroclaw Cathedral Island on Plac Katedralny , in the immediate vicinity of the Wroclaw Cathedral .

history

The Aegidius Church probably dates from the 20s of the 13th century. The single-nave church consists of a square presbytery and an apse formed from three sides of the hexagon . In 1329 a third canonical was established at the church by Bishop Nanker . Around 1500 there were four altars in the church, three of them in the nave and the choir and the fourth in the sacristy. In the 16th century a house was built next to the church for twelve clerics who lived here together. An archway, the Klösseltor (Polish: Brama Kluskowa or Kluszczana ) connected the two buildings. Several small changes were made to the interior over the next few centuries. Depending on the era, ornaments were exchanged and reassembled.

On May 24, 1888, the Franciscans of the Saxon Franciscan Province founded a monastery at the church , which was transferred to the newly founded Silesian Franciscan Province in 1911 ; her main task was to hear confession in the cathedral . After slight damage in the Second World War , renovation work was carried out on the church, with many baroque ornaments being removed to give the church its Romanesque appearance .
